How Do I Choose the Best plus Size Shrug?

When choosing a plus size shrug or bolero, it's important to consider the length of its sleeves, the material that it is made of, and how well it fits. It's also a good idea to make sure that the shrug actually looks right with the dress, top, or outfit that you plan to pair it with. In many cases, women by a plus size shrug to go with a specific outfit, so it may be wise to actually wear or take that outfit with you while shopping for a shrug so that you know exactly how it will work together. If it is impractical to wear the outfit to the store, be sure to keep the tags on the items you bring home so that you can return those that don't suit.

Many women are concerned about the appearance of their upper arms. If you fear that they are too large or flabby, a plus size shrug can restore your confidence and make you feel more comfortable wearing short-sleeved and sleeveless clothing. The first thing that you should be concerned about when selecting a shrug is whether it actually provides you with the coverage that you want. In some cases, a plus size shrug may itself have very short, skimpy sleeves that do not cover the areas of your arms that you want concealed. This is why it is crucial that you actually try the shrug on to see where the hem of the sleeve hits on your arm.

Another consideration is the fabric from which your plus size shrug or bolero is made. Shrugs can be made from a variety of materials and fabrics, and you want to make sure that your shrug matches the rest of your outfit in formality. You also want to make sure that the shrug is appropriate to the weather. Certainly you don't want to be wearing a heavy-knitted shrug over a sundress in the summertime. Be careful with crocheted and knitted shrugs that expose a lot of skin, as this look may be unflattering and may defeat the purpose of wearing a plus size cover-up.

Many plus size clothing retailers often hold sales and special events. This can be a great opportunity to buy plus size shrugs at a considerable discount. If you find shrugs that you like and that are comfortable, consider buying several in different colors and styles to go with several outfits. By having the shrugs on hand, you may find that you wear more of your wardrobe more often.

These are a pretty good item to start with if you are thinking about getting into knitting, or you just want an easy project. You'll get to learn a few of the different skills needed for larger projects, but it won't take as long, since a shrug doesn't have much bulk to it.

They are also marginally more forgiving about mistakes, since you aren't having to work around the waist, which I find the most difficult part.

@Ana1234 - I don't really worry too much about trying to achieve that hourglass figure. I just like clothes and I like dressing in different styles. It's not too hard to find plus size shrugs and wraps so I have a lot of them and they can add a different flavor to an outfit.

I would recommend them because it's so difficult to find decent plus size clothes, that when you do you will want to wear them a lot. And adding a different shrug to a dress each time can completely change the look. So you feel like you've got fifty different looks to draw on, rather than just a few.

I was never a big fan of shrugs, but I have seen them used very effectively on plus size girls with dresses, or occasionally even with pants.

If you combine it well with a nice, open skirt, it can give you the illusion of a smaller waist, because it broadens your shoulders and the skirt or dress broadens your lower body.

You have to be careful not to use a thick material if you're quite top-heavy though, because it will just make the situation worse.
