What are Coin Appraisals?

Shannon Kietzman

Coin appraisals are estimations of the value that different forms of currency have. Despite the name, coin appraisals are use to determine the value of paper currency as well as coin currency. In addition, coin appraisals may be used to place a value on currency from any country in the world. Individuals who collect coins as a hobby often depend upon coin appraisals in order to determine the value of their collection. Coin appraisals also help them determine the value of an individual coin in order to know how much they should get in return if they decide to sell or trade their coins for other coins.

Coin appraisals can be performed by professional appraisers, though some hobbyists become so involved in coin collecting that they are capable of making a good estimate on their own. To be a professional appraiser, however, takes years of practice and training. Accurate coin appraisals involve considering the currency’s strike, grade, mint, and other markings.

Many coin shops provide free coin appraisals. Therefore, anyone who has a collection of coins should not feel obligated to pay someone to provide an appraisal. In addition, obtaining free coin appraisals from an expert does not obligate a collector to sell any portion of his or her collection.

It is important for the collector to keep in mind that the appraisal will likely be a fair market value offer of what the appraiser is willing to pay for the currency. Therefore, the quote will reflect the fact that the appraiser hopes to resell the currency for a profit. At the same time, a respectable appraiser will not quote a price that is unfairly low. For this reason, it is best to get several coin appraisals from different dealers in order to be sure the price quoted is fair.

When selecting a professional appraiser, it is important to find one with a good reputation. The shop or shop owner ideally should have been performing coin appraisals for several years and should have experience with international and ancient currency, as well as domestic and current currency.
