What are Conceptual Skills?

The term "conceptual skills" refers to the aptitude that people have to formulate ideas. Such skills include thinking creatively, formulating abstractions, analyzing complex situations, understanding issues and solving problems. In the business world, these skills are considered an integral requirement for executives in top-level management positions. Conceptual skills are different from technical skills and human skills. All three types of skills play important roles in certain situations or for certain purposes, but conceptual skills heave the broadest application because they can pertain to virtually anything.

Conceptual skills involve knowing how to and being able to formulate ideas. Individuals who have strong conceptual skills typically have excellent cognitive abilities to think creatively and solve problems. In a business environment, someone who has these skills might come up with an idea for a new product or a new process. He or she is able to examine a complex issue and formulate a specific, effective course of action.

People who have conceptual skills can examine how ideas are interrelated. They effectively perceive individual elements in relationship to the whole. People who have strong conceptual skills are often identified as effective leaders or managers. This generally is because of their ability to understand the organization as a whole and develop creative strategies. Top-level managers often need to have technical skills and human skills in addition to conceptual skills.

Human skills involve knowing how to interact with other people.

Technical skills involve knowing about things and physical processes. For example, if three steps are required in a waste management process, individuals who have technical skills would know how to implement each of these three steps. People often obtain technical skills either through job training or technical colleges. Supervisors over specific departments usually are managers who have strong technical skills.

Human skills, also called interpersonal skills, involve knowing how to interact well with people. Typically, no one enjoys working for a manager who is rude or inconsiderate, and a manager who has poor human skills can reduce both the morale and productivity of his or her subordinates. Managers who have effective human skills, however, often have employees who possess positive attitudes and strong desires to increase their productivity. In a business environment, it typically is important for managers to work effectively with their peers, subordinates and supervisors. Other interpersonal skills include the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with teams.

High-level managers can utilize all three types of skills to formulate and implement ideas. For example, a leader in the automobile industry needs to know the technical aspects of car production but also must be able to conceptualize the automobile industry and understand how to successfully market cars and how to compete against other car manufacturers. When he or she has formulated an idea for a new product, process or marketing plan, for example, interpersonal skills will help him or her to communicate the idea to managers and employees and convince them that the idea will work. They will then be able to implement the idea and work toward making it successful.

SauteePan- That is so true. I have to say that conceptual skills for mental health professionals are also really important.

These people have to understand their patient’s disorder and be able to offer effective psychological treatment.

They have to be able to understand the scope and purpose of the treatment in order for them to help their patient. Having conceptual skills is the person’s ability to see the big picture.

For example, understanding the effects of a manic depressive person not taking lithium will cause the mental health professional to explain to the patient why the medication is important and how the patient will function as a result of the medication.

A psychiatrist prescribing certain medications has to conceptualize how that medication is going to affect the patient before he writes a prescription.

This is important in the health field because many people are resistant to change and may not accept medical interventions easily.

Bhutan- Usually people with strong conceptual skills often demonstrate strong people skills, and strong leadership skills.

For example, my husband is a vice president of the company and attained that position at a very young age. The reasoning was because of his exceptional conceptual skills.

He was able to see the strategic direction of the company and had his team follow this direction by breaking down smaller goals for his team. His extraordinary people skills also created a cohesive team environment that allowed the team to succeed.

His knowledge skills and abilities are extraordinary for his position.

People call him for all over the country to ask him questions regarding various circumstances. He often selects people with the right employee skills through skills assessment and general forecasting idea of how the employee would workout in the framework of the company.

sing conceptual skills like this often allows for better hiring decisions with reduced turnover.

Klow- I remember the pet rock. I also wanted to add that people with strong conceptual skills are generally leaders. Since these people can often put together abstract ideas and make them concrete for the average person to understand, they are usually very successful.

For example, teaching skills for a teacher demonstrates conceptual skills. The teacher often has to take abstract information and can then break it down so that the students can understand the material.

This happens a lot in the fields of science and math. Often, before a student can perform an abstract word problem, they might need the teacher to explain the problem using mathematical manipulatives.

Such is the case with young children who do not have a framework for conceptual skills yet.

A teacher may demonstrate place value by grouping sticks in groups of 10. This allows a child to visually see the message that the teacher is trying to convey.

Once the child learns the message the teacher can continue using her conceptual skills in order to further develop the child's mathematical skills. This is only occurs when new mathematical theories are introduced. Most children do not begin to develop abstract reasoning until the age of seven.

Every great trend, business innovation, and effective product originates from someone with a unique set of conceptual skills and thought processes. For instance, Gary Dahl conceived the Pet Rock in the mid 1970's. Now, no one today is going to say that the Pet Rock was any sort of a real contribution to society and that it really served no purpose whatsoever. However, from a conceptual skills standpoint, Dahl's idea was flawless. He offered kids and lazy people an alternative to living pets that would require absolutely no maintenance, care, or anything, and would never run away or die. What originated as an idea for a stupid novelty was able to take hold of the popular imagination just long enough for Dahl's concept, and his financial situation, to succeed.
