What are the Best Tips for Home Security?

Many people choose to install expensive alarm systems for home security purposes, and while these can be effective, there are some much less expensive steps that can be taken in order to make one's home more secure. In addition, it is important to be diligent about locking up every time one leaves the house, and not simply rely on an alarm system to do all the work. One of the best tips for home security is to begin by assessing all the doors and windows in the house.

Doors should seal tightly against the door frames, not leaving a gap where a burglar could pry open the door or kick it in. Windows should seal tightly for the same reason. Whenever moving into a new house, it is important to change all of the locks on the doors; in addition, installing dead bolts on all exterior doors is another important measure for home security. Finally, choose doors that are solid, not those with glass panels; it is easy to break the glass panel, reach in, and turn the knob from the inside. If you do have a door with glass panels, then consider installing double cylinder locks.

Home security systems can be costly, but they are usually worth the investment, especially in nicer homes that are prime targets.

For sliding glass doors, placing a pipe or even wooden board in the sliding track can prevent it from being opened. Always remember to lock the doors and the windows when leaving the house, and even when inside the home. Burglars are often able to just walk right in through an unlocked door, particularly a garage door. Keep the garage door closed whether or not the car is in it, and do not make it obvious that no one is home.

This is another one of the most important home security tips. Make it look as if someone is home by leaving lights on or purchasing timers for lights. If going out of town, ask neighbors to pick up the mail, and do not leave notes on the door for friends and neighbors. In addition, don't hide a key in an obvious place, such as under the doormat; if it is absolutely necessary to hide a key outside, bury it in an old film canister or small plastic container.

If an alarm system for home security is installed, be sure to place the signs in the front yard and in the window, which can deter a burglar. Do not write the security code anywhere near the keypad, and do not share it with anyone. Finally, do not let anyone into the home whom is not already known and trusted; for instance, salespeople or someone who knocks on the door asking to make a phone call. If you want to be helpful, offer to take information through the closed door, and make the call yourself.

The number of home burglaries traditionally spike in the summer months. I think that light timers and Fake TV are excellent solutions to deter burglars. Also, playing anti-theft home occupancy sounds on an MP3 or a CD (sells on Amazon) in home while away is a great way to convince a burglar that someone is in the house.
