I think that one of the best home remedies for reducing chest congestion is to take a long, hot shower. The warmth of the water and the steam that is produces helps relieve congestion, and even calms a hacking cough.

Using an herbal shower or bath gel while taking a steamy shower will provide additional congestion relief. There are many products available that have herbal oils such as lavender, eucalyptus, and mint. When these products mix with the warm water, the fumes they produce add to the benefit of the shower steam to soothe and calm a cough while loosening chest phlegm.
