What Are the Pros and Cons of Buying Bespoke Clothing?

The pros and cons of buying bespoke clothing include the issues of fit, cost, and convenience. Bespoke clothing is made to measure, which can ensure a wonderful fit, but also requires a considerable investment of time and money. In addition, it is not always easy to find a bespoke tailor who can produce clothing affordably or in a reasonable amount of time. Individuals who live in areas where they have access to tailors and seamstresses who can create quality clothing and who are required by professional or personal obligations to be extremely well dressed can benefit the most from buying a bespoke wardrobe.

Bespoke clothing, also called custom-made or tailored clothing, refers to garments that are made to the measurements of one person. Unlike off-the-rack clothing, which is made from one pattern sized to fit many different people, bespoke clothing is made from a pattern derived from the body measurements of a single person. As such, this clothing can be extremely comfortable for and flattering on the person wearing it. For individuals who find it difficult to find off-the-rack clothing that fits them or who are very small or large, tailored clothing may be necessary if they are to dress well.

The custom fit aspect of bespoke clothing also means that it can cost quite a bit to purchase. While this type of clothing tends to be of very high quality and will probably last for a long time, it also means that, as fashions change or a person's size changes, it may no longer be wearable or desirable. This can make custom-fitted clothing a poor investment unless an individual makes a point of purchasing only classic styles and does not gain or lose significant amounts of weight.

Another disadvantage to bespoke clothing is that it can require a considerable amount of time to produce. Particularly in areas where there are few tailors who are capable of making quality clothing, the time between having measurements taken and actually receiving the finished garment can be weeks or even months. This means that a person may have to place an order for his clothing long before he'll be able to wear it. This requires planning on the part of most people who rely on bespoke clothing as part of their everyday wardrobe, planning that may need to be repeated every season as they begin to rebuild their wardrobe.
