What Are the Pros and Cons of Taking Amoxicillin and Ibuprofen?

Christina Edwards

Taking ibuprofen for pain and amoxicillin for a bacterial infection is generally considered to be safe. Both of these medications are effective, and they are both relatively inexpensive. These two medications will also not usually interact with each other. On the other hand, both of these medications may cause mild side effects, and improper use can lead to more serious medical problems. Patients should speak to a medical professional regarding any medication side effects or when mixing medications.

Ibuprofen is a common pain reliever and anti-inflammatory drug. It is commonly used to relieve minor aches and pains, and reduce swelling and fevers. Ibuprofen is often found in over-the-counter and prescription medications. This drug is usually inexpensive and effective.

Amoxicillin is a popular antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. Although a prescription is usually necessary to obtain this medication, it is usually rather inexpensive. It is also usually very effective when used to treat most bacterial infections.

One might use amoxicillin and ibuprofen together for a number of reasons. Some infections, like ear or tooth infections, can be very painful. While the amoxicillin can be used to help clear up the infection, the ibuprofen can be used to alleviate some of the pain. Other types of infections may also cause a fever, and ibuprofen can be used as a fever reducer.

Although they are considered safe and effective medications, using amoxicillin and ibuprofen does have a couple of disadvantages. For instance, there is a chance of an allergic reaction when taking amoxicillin and ibuprofen. Minor side effects are also somewhat common when taking both medications.

The side effects of ibuprofen are generally quite mild, if they are experienced at all. An upset stomach or nausea can occur when taking this medication, for instance. This medication can be taken with food to help prevent these side effects. Misuse or prolonged use of ibuprofen has also been linked to liver damage.

Amoxicillin side effects are also generally mild, but they are usually a little more likely to occur. As with ibuprofen, one of the most common side effects of amoxicillin is nausea. This medication can also be taken with food to help prevent this. Also, if a person does not finish taking all of the amoxicillin that his doctor prescribes, antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria may develop. These types of bacteria are very hard to eradicate.

When a doctor recommends or prescribes a new medication, a patient should always let him know about any other medications that he is taking. This includes over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Also, if the side effects of amoxicillin and ibuprofen are severe, the doctor should be notified as soon as possible.

Can I take vitamin b12 tablets along with ibuprofen?

My doctor directed me to take my ibuprofen and amoxicillin together. I asked her if I need to leave some time in between and she said that's not necessary.

@anamur-- I'm taking amoxicillin and ibuprofen right now and I haven't experienced any side effects so far. Great job for being cautious, but I think you can take these two drugs without worrying as long as you don't take more than the recommended dose. They have no interaction whatsoever.

Unfortunately, antibiotics don't provide pain relief. I have a tooth abscess and naturally, it has to be treated with antibiotics. But I also need a pain reliever like ibuprofen while the antibiotic works because my tooth is so painful.

If I have a fever or if I have muscle aches and pains, I will take an ibuprofen while I'm on amoxicillin. But for the most part, I try to avoid it or try to take it less frequently because of the side effects. Ibuprofen is a great drug but it gives me upset stomach sometimes. Amoxicillin has the same effect on me. After the second day of amoxicillin treatment, I develop bloating and diarrhea.

I'm cautious with all drugs though, not just these. Unless I have to, I try not to take drugs together. Even if drugs don't interact with one another, they place additional pressure on the liver and kidneys.
