What is a Mormon?

Was Jesus a man or alien? God put the seed in Mary, and Mary gave birth. Jesus must be a man. Religion is crazy. When you're young and someone's telling you something, you believe it. The older you get, the smarter you get.(not everyone) Also with age comes the knowledge of other religions. Which one is right?

My opinion is religion was made up many different times to give people something to live for which people thought gave life meaning. Don't get me wrong. I believe it is possible there is life after death, but for one person to be the creator of everything is becoming harder to believe for me. For example, what if mars or another planet for that matter will become populated with life by man or woman. Does that mean the person that put life there is god?

Mormons do believe in God and are Christians. The ones who believe in God are Christian!

All these different religions think they have it figured out. It does not take a large vocabulary to know that Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life. And I don't care who ya are or how many great works you have done, or how many commandments you have kept, you will not see the other side of glory except through Him.

I would rather have a personal intimate relationship with my Lord and my God than to have anyone tell me I have to be at church every Sunday for three hours, or I can't have a glass of wine once in a while or be pressured into doing anything that God himself hasn't told me to do.

I do have a line of respect for different religions, but folks, your good works just ain't good enough, and I am not going to rely on any book that has been written in the last one hundred or so years!

See, that's where you are wrong. You do not strive to be good on the preface that in doing so you will be saved. Righteousness stems from your faith and your faith only and by your belief in Christ, that through his grace, you will have attained eternal salvation by the Lord's immeasurable mercy. When you believe, and are born again in Christ, you will see a change in your life; it will be your heart that becomes an engine of good works, not your human consciousness, fueled by glares of your peers and worldly views.

Believing in the Lord Christ, the one who is equal to God the Father, who is also fully man and God, is different than believing in the Mormon Jesus.

By being you, you commit the greatest sin that which ex-Lucifer, Satan, himself has committed; exalting himself over to the throne of God. Satan fell from grace through his failed attempt to become God and Mormons believe that they too, will become "gods" of their own worlds.

God is eternal and we His creations, are not. God is something you are, not something you can become. Therefore, the fault lies with Mormons for putting their beliefs onto ideas of the world, and not the kind that our Heavenly Father would appreciate.

I believe in Christ. I believe he is my saviour and redeemer, and that the only way to live with him again is to repent, keep the commandments, and believe in him. I am confused at the teaching to only believe and be saved. Is repentance not an action? And is repentance not necessary to go to heaven? Also, what does it mean to accept Christ as your personal saviour? Would that not mean you would want to be like him thus doing good? Faith without works is dead, is it not?

I just cannot fathom calling myself a Christian and not expecting to do good -- not merely "accepting" christ. I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Instead of debating, why not try studying the Book of Mormon. See for yourself if it is true or not. Listen to an LDS general conference talk. Try to live the teachings of the LDS church first before making a decision.

@anon151619: The members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints believe in the claims of Joseph Smith, a false prophet.

Joseph Smith prophesied that New York would be destroyed if they rejected the [Mormon] gospel (D&C 84:114-115). He also prophesied that the rebellion of South Carolina and war between the states would result in war being poured out upon all nations; slaves would revolt; the inhabitants of the earth would mourn; famine, plague, earthquake, thunder, lightning, and a full end of all nations would result (D&C 87). Oddly, this prophecy is the one most often cited by Mormons to prove Joseph Smith's prophetic power!

Joseph Smith was a polytheist. History of the Church 6:474 records Smith stating, "I wish to declare I have always and in all congregations when I have preached on the subject of the Deity, it has been the plurality of Gods." Joseph Smith declared that "God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens!" (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, 345). This is clearly not the biblical God.

In essence, Christ's death means nothing more to a Mormon than the gaining of the ability to be resurrected so that their works may be judged. How does a book stating the supposed human capability to enter the godhood fit the description of "fullness of gospel?" It worth no more than bunch of Buddhism scrolls to me. Does the concept, "Let us all reach the nirvana," seem familiar to you?

@laman: Being a Christian is not all about rituals, going to church, or doing certain things while refraining from other things. Being a Christian is all about having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. A personal relationship with Jesus Christ, through faith, is what makes a person a Christian. The Mormons are actually far from being true Christians. This is because the Mormons believe that God was once a human and attained his status as the Supreme being of the universe through righteous living. Thus, they believe that any human can also become a god through the similar process of living righteously.

Moreover, they think that we, humans, are capable of earning our salvation. Therefore, a Mormon cannot be a Christian. A Mormon should consider the option of abandoning his status as a Mormon to become a Christian.

This is all too confusing. Mormons, Christians. All the same if you ask me. I respect their beliefs, so me being nonreligious people will curse me and what I think is of you guys are hypocrites. You say this is a sin, then you'll go on and on with the 'sins', acting out for god.

mormons are very nice people. i am one. i have never met one mean mormon. we believe in the whole bible and we really aren't a branch of the christian church.

joseph smith believed in the bible. his family was going to many different churches and he was very confused.so he went to the sacred grove and prayed but satin came over him.god the father and jesus christ appeared to him and told him to join no church because they were all incorrect. he was only fourteen then. you should research the rest of the story. i could just tell the whole story but that would take forever.

honestly, i love being a mormon. when people talk about how going to church for three hours is so boring, well it isn't. we believe in god and jesus christ just like the christians and catholics. mormons don't make fun of their religion. so why should they make fun of us? just saying.

If Mr. Smith is the head of the Mormons, then what is his lineage? Does he have a bloodline to Jesus Christ our saviour? He was an ordinary man who didn't want to conform to the bible laws and in turn, interpreted what he thought was the meaning of the bible.

Have any of you ever told a joke that's about 5 minutes long and by the time you hear it again from someone else you find out it's a short version of what you said and more importantly, the words have been changed? Duh, that's how life is. If you have experienced this, than you do realize that this is the same concept that was passed after Mr. Smith told his joke, I mean his word according to the bible?

This is just my opinion and I'm not arguing anything. It seems that the Mormon religion is a good one, following Christ and knowing that he is the Lord and savior of the world. I'm not too certain about this prophet of nowadays kind of thing. But of course, I do not know everything about the Mormon beliefs. That's just my opinion.

It is amazing that religion sparks so much contention. Why is it even a fight at all? Mormons belong to a church called The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The Bible is taught from there every Sunday. Why aren't they Christians, again?

If you believe in Jesus Christ and accept him as your personal savior you are a Christian, because the Bible tells you so! If you change the Bible and create your own version you are not a Christian because you hinder others and lead them into false prophecy.

If you choose to believe only part of the Bible and quote from only part of the Bible then manipulation would be the goal. This would most likely benefit only a few.

First thanks "WiseGeek" for providing this format and honest summation of the "Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints". We are also called Latter Day "Saints" only to distinguish us in the modern day restoration vs the "Saints" during Jesus day. There are many references in the New Testament to the body of Saints in the old world.

In Mormon definition, a son or daughter of God is a saint or follower of Christ, by believing that Christ atoned for our sins, over came death and then commands us to follow him in both word and deed. So we believe we are saved by two things: first and foremost taking on us the atonement/name of Christ and second keeping his commandments as he clearly has given, even above Paul, Peter, Joseph Smith or whomever.

Yes, Paul states in Eph 2:8 "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:" (which applies to point no. 1)

But as James 1:27 states "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world."

Of course ultimately the Master himself commands us all:

"Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven" (KJV). There are countless parables (10 Virgins, Talents, Lazarus and the rich man) Revelation 3:15,16 "I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.

So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew thee out of my mouth."

Sorry for the lengthy example, but Mormons take literally the commandment of Jesus to keep the fathers commandments and also profess his name.

I've been a Mormon convert for over 34 years. I've "never" witnessed any compulsory marriage of anyone. And certainly never any arranged marriages to anyone.

In all my 34 years, in the heart of Mormonism, I've seen only countless good families with "normal" husband and wife families. I've attended and seen hundreds of different church settings. You would think with this much time I would have seen some "unsavory" practices but to my great joy and blessing the gospel of Jesus Christ has been restored!

The Savior told us "By their fruits you shall know them." I've seen great fruits in the church, and I'm sorry that others appear to have seen something else but for me, they are again just myths. --Steve

The scripture in the book of Revelations (Revelation 22:19) that a few of you (and many others) have quoted, is actually talking about just the book of Revelations.

The Bible was not originally written as one book of scripture, but as many separate writings that were later combined to make one book. This is a common misconception. Just something to for you to think about.

Wow. I am intrigued at all of the several viewpoints in this topic. I'm not saying anyone is wrong or anyone is right. However, I do know that we all have the ability and right to have freedom OF religion or freedom FROM religion. Everyone speaking in these posts has the right to do so and with their own opinions. This is not a right or wrong kind of thing. We are looking for answers and we all want to know what's waiting, if anything, on the other side. In the meantime, let's respect each other's choices and opinions.

Mormons are Christians, but they're different then other faiths. People dispute about it because they don't understand. They criticize because they don't know. And someone asked where they could learn more: go online and you can learn all about them and what they believe.

I don't believe in religion. But if there really is a god than he will not send me into the bounds of hell for simply not believing, but if i live life an honest man and do not commit a crime that seems horrible enough to "go to hell" then he must. but if i am an honest man he will accept me for what i am and what i believe. some people i know believe that god invented the atom, and from there. nature and forces of science took the rest.

So, first, the theory of Evolution does not say we descended from monkeys, but that there was some creature that we descended from that monkeys also descended from. Just to state it more correctly.

And there are problems with evolution that still haven't been solved, but it is generally accepted that parts of it are right.

Second, the proof or disproving of evolution doesn't really affect the proof or disproving of God, as in the Bible it just says that God created the world, not how He created it. For all we know he did it step by step and took his time (I mean, time, matter and space all belong to Him anyway. He can do with it what he wants).

Third, if you take the combined death tolls of all ten Crusades, the Inquisition, the Salem Witch trials, and any other religious murders, and then compare to what happened in the USSR (which was atheist) or what has happened in China, or in Manchuria by the Japanese in World War II or Hitler in Germany, or the tribes in Africa, or in Cambodia by Pol Pot, atheism's death toll is way larger than all other religions put together, by several orders of magnitude. Kind of like comparing a swimming pool to a glass of water.

It is far easier to justify a mass murder when you don't have to worry about what your God(s) might think about it.

But the thing is, Christianity, as fallible as its adherents are, and as many times as certain groups have slipped on this, advocates a tolerance that will allow people to be atheists, even if it tends to destabilize them and makes them more likely to join the forces of mass murderers. Because until they actually start murdering people, they have the right to choose who to follow.

And again, it is not true that Christians are always living what they were taught, but generally they come to their senses eventually and stop straying from the path.

I know very little about the Mormon faith? Does anyone know where I could get some easy to understand straight forward information about it? What are the main teachings a mormon has to follow?

Actual factual studies seem to be lacking in this posting area. User anon58920 quotes revelations saying not to add or take away from this book.

If anon58920 would do some research, he or she would realize that the book of revelations was not written last. In fact, so many of the books in the new testament were both written and spoken after revelation. You must take out about 14 of those books if what you are claiming is true.

If you go to Ezekiel 37 and read through it starting in verse 15, you would realize that the Mormon church is simply stating they have the stick of Joseph, but I don't know if the type of people quoting on this post are willing enough, open-minded, christian enough to do some research to enlightenment.

If you were you would seriously have to consider the Mormons are dead on or completely wrong. If you look at the facts, you will seriously have to consider what the Mormons are offering.

Something no other christian church can even touch. Eternal marriage. Christ never taught until death to you part, but eternity. Look into the facts people, as a man cannot be saved in ignorance.

Jesus Christ is part of the triune God and Holy Spirit. Just because you don't believe it, doesn't mean it is not true. There is no gray area, only black and white. To rewrite God's word to suit your ego is of the devil himself. I pray for you Mormons. God save your souls.

Let me first say that I am Mormon and that there is a Godhead. God the Father, His son Jesus Christ, and The Holy Spirit. The three are one but separate distinct individuals. But they are also One -- One in purpose.

God Bless. I would just like to say one thing. This guy Joseph Smith comes out with something similar to what Gods word says. How to live and so on and so forth. But the true word of God has been around for thousands of years. Way before Joseph came out with anything. Thanks to the Jew, us gentiles have a chance to get to heaven. Which is through Jesus Christ.In the Kings James Bible John 14:6 states " Jesus saith unto him, I ma the way the truth and the life. No man cometh unto the Father, but by me." Going to show you that the only way to heaven is through Jesus Christ.Now in the Word of God gives verses on how God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit are one. They all work in one. There are 3 and all have different jobs but they are all in 1 accord. FOr instance:

* In verse 2 it says them! The man hurried to the 3 of Them and bowed to Them. It is not an angel because angels would not allow you to bow but tell you that he is a messenger.

God wants us to be a follow of Him. God the Father is our creator. He knew us what we would do, say, act like, when we would be born, when we would die, how many hairs are on our head, our body, you name it God knew it waaaay before He created this earth.

The Diety of Christ or if you like, whether Jesus *is* or is *not* God is fundamental to the Bible as we have known it for thousands of years prior to Joseph Smith's new revelation in 1820. This is not a small matter, it is foundational. If you have one group claiming Christ Diety and another denouncing His Diety, it is a Big Deal. Our Faith as Christian's stands or falls on who Jesus is and who we believe He is. You can't put your faith and trust in Jesus and say, Oh he's a car salesman from Kentucky, because then it's *not* Jesus of the Bible, No matter how much you believe it is. As for myself I will worship the One true and Living God-Jesus!

Mormons are Christians in every way. On Sunday, members go to church with the express purpose to learn more about Christ’s teachings and to become more like him. During the week, members are encouraged to be kind, loving, patient, friendly and happy, just as Jesus was. Helping others is at the center of their faith. Becoming Christ-like is the goal because latter-day saints believe that after death, those who are worthy may return back to the presence of God and live with him. It is not easy to reach this goal considering the state of the world today. Ultimately, no unclean thing, or person, can enter the Kingdom of God. That’s why so much emphasis is given to living a pure and “saintly” life. For Mormons, it is not enough to save one’s self, or even one’s family, but each member is encouraged to help others (neighbors, friends) draw nearer to Christ, nearer to purity, nearer to happiness, nearer to the end––to qualify to live with God. There is nothing better than knowing where you are going after death and why you are here on earth. Yes, nobody is perfect, but it is so important to do good in our short sojourn on this planet. Mormons are Christians in the best sense of the term.

The book of Mormon is a collection of ancient writings from a few groups of people who left jerusalem to come to the new world (America). These writings were written by prophets and apostles in the americas and were given the authority to do so from god. You can read it yourself and find out. And all that crap that Joseph Smith wrote it, its a lie, he didn't write it, he translated the work. Many people confuse things in the world, just look at politics. LDS (Mormon) members are no different.

The Book of Mormon is not an addition to the Bible. It is a separate account of Jesus Christ. It is composed of the testimonies and revelations of the prophets that lived on the American continents. Anyone who thinks that only those people who lived in Israel and the surrounding areas spoken of in the Bible were God's children and that Jesus would only bestow his love on those people doesn't fully understand the Bible and need to check their own "Christianity". The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter Day Saints believes not only that God spoke to the prophets of the Bible but also the prophets of the Book of Mormon so that all souls globally could be saved. They are two separate scriptures yet equally loved, read and practiced by the LDS church. Those who claim that the Book of Mormon and the LDS church are false doctrine or not christian are invited to pray with real intent on the truthfulness of both. If you do not have a solid answer from God that they are incorrect, you should not condemn them. It says in the Bible that those who condemn and judge will be judged upon the same at the time of redemption. I promise you in the name of Jesus Christ that if you pray for truth, you too can receive personal revelation about the fullness of the gospel and will no longer need to question as you will know of an assurity. i don't believe that mormons are saved or christian. they do not follow Christ the way he says to in the bible. in the bible it says that there will not be anymore prophets. it says in revelation 22:19 if any man shall take away from this book of this prophecy God shall take away his part out of the book of life and out of the holy city and from the things written in this book. the bible is the end of prophecy. there should not be anymore additions the the bible it says it is done. if you are to believe Christ then you must follow the bible completely.

If a Christian is someone that follows Jesus Christ, and Mormons believe in and follow Jesus Christ, then why the dispute as to whether they are Christians?
