When the winter winds begin to blow, it’s time to get ready for winter clothing. Long johns, coats and mittens – when the temperatures start falling, people living in colder climates start bundling up. There are a few things to consider when choosing clothes for winter.

One thing to consider when purchasing winter clothing is how cold the winters are in your part of the world. In warmer climates, you may only need a jacket. In colder areas, a winter coat will be necessary. Different coats provide different levels of protection from the cold. Coats meant for skiers and other outdoor sports enthusiasts often provide the most warmth, keeping the wearer warm in even the coldest temperatures.

A sturdy pair of boots is a necessity in many parts of the world, especially for winter. Most are lined with either fur (often fake) or fleece material to keep the feet warmer. When looking for a pair of boots, consider how you will be using them. Boot with lower sides are great for people who will not need to trek through snow and slush. Other people, who live in areas that get a lot of snow, may need boots with high sides and a waterproof exterior.

Extremities, such as your hands, are usually the first body parts to feel the cold. Having a warm pair of gloves can save you from discomfort. Like most winter clothing, gloves should be purchased according to your needs. Gloves are available in all types, from a light knit fabric through to thick gloves meant for those who work outdoors during the winter. Some gloves are waterproof and some have material on the fingers to improve grip.

It is estimated that 30% of a person’s body heat is lost through the top of their head on a cold day. It is important to choose a hat that fits well and is thick enough to keep your head and ears warm. Some hats even have ear flaps to cover the ears and provide extra protection. Other options for winter head gear include headbands and earmuffs.

Winter clothing also includes what you wear under your coat. The best way to stay warm in the winter is to wear several thin layers. Because of this, some great types of winter clothing are turtlenecks, long-sleeved t-shirts, and thermal bodysuits. Sweaters and sweatshirt are also great winter clothing. They are easy to slip on or off depending on the temperature. Socks can also be layered, useful if going out in very cold weather. There are also thermal socks available for those in extremely cold environments.

It is important to consider your needs before purchasing winter clothing. Buying clothes that cannot meet your demands will leave you cold and wet. However, buying clothes that keep you warmer than necessary will be just as uncomfortable. Finding winter wear that is meant for the climate you live in can make winters much more enjoyable.

One important factor to remember when purchasing winter clothing for kids is that they will still be growing, and they will likely be wearing things underneath their clothing. You want to be sure that childrens winter clothing will fit them and protect them through the winter.

One thing to consider when purchasing winter clothing is how you will be using the clothing. Winter sports will require a different type of clothing than winter formal wear and winter casual wear. You should also factor in the ability of a jacket and other winter clothing to protect you from a cold wind. A sweater may look and feel heavy, only to perform poorly if the wind is whipping through the streets as it does in parts of the east coast and Chicago. If you buy your winter clothing on sale, you may want to remember to purchase things that are in style. It is pointless to buy winter clothing, on sale or not, if you will never wear it.
